The former site of the Girl Guide Hall at Forestville has been repurposed and transformed into the new headquarters of the Sydney Northern Beaches Woodturners.
Once an empty public building that rarely saw use, the Girl Guide Hall was purchased and refurbished by the Woodturners, who now use the site as a community woodworking workshop that comes complete with state-of-the-art equipment such as an art dust extraction system.
Their new venue opened on the 25th of March 2021, scouted for the group by the Northern Beaches Council.
The Woodturners, who have been active since 1993, focus on the craft of woodwork while simultaneously providing like-minded people with a community to belong to. They offer classes and workshops to teach those interested all about the wonders people can make with wood, tools, chisels and lathes.
The bulk of their projects relate to the creation of furniture, decorations, and toys. One of their more recent works was the creation of 22 possum boxes for the WIRES Australian Wildlife Rescue Organisation earlier in March.
Prior to the acquisition of their new hub, the group primarily had to rent out spaces, relying on the goodwill of other people for space and equipment. Now, with a fully decked-out workshop at their disposal, the group can finally claim to have a permanent home and headquarters of their own.
